Why Your Car Won’t Start: Common Causes & Quick Fixes

Few things are more frustrating than a car that won’t start. Before you call for a tow, let’s diagnose the problem. A mobile mechanic can fix most common no-start conditions on-site — no shop required.

Dead or Weak Battery

The most common cause of a no-start by far. Signs include:

  • Rapid clicking when you turn the key (or press start)
  • Dim dashboard lights or none at all
  • Engine cranks very slowly, then stops
  • Absolutely nothing happens when you turn the key

Quick Check: If your headlights are dim or won’t come on at all, it’s almost certainly a battery issue. Try a jump start first.

Faulty Starter Motor

If you hear a single heavy click when you turn the key but the engine doesn’t crank, the starter motor is likely the culprit. The battery may be fully charged — the starter just can’t engage the flywheel. This is a common failure on vehicles with 80,000+ miles.

Bad Alternator

Did your battery die shortly after being replaced? The alternator may not be recharging it. Warning signs while driving include:

  • Battery warning light illuminated on the dashboard
  • Headlights gradually dimming at night
  • Accessories (radio, AC, power windows) acting erratically
  • Multiple batteries dying within weeks of each other

Fuel Delivery Problems

If the engine cranks normally but still won’t fire up, the issue is likely fuel reaching the combustion chamber:

  • Empty tank (the gauge can read incorrectly)
  • Clogged fuel filter restricting flow
  • Failed fuel pump (often fails suddenly)
  • Bad fuel pressure regulator or injectors

Ignition System Failure

No spark means no combustion. Common ignition faults:

  • Worn or fouled spark plugs
  • Failed ignition coils (can fail one at a time on multi-coil setups)
  • Faulty crankshaft position sensor
  • Bad ignition switch

Note: A flashing check engine light combined with a rough-running engine often points to ignition misfires. Continuing to drive can damage the catalytic converter.

What You Can Try Right Now

  1. Make sure the car is fully in Park (or Neutral for manual)
  2. Check that the key fob battery isn’t dead — try the backup key slot
  3. Inspect battery terminals under the hood for corrosion or loose connections
  4. Attempt a jump start from another vehicle or portable battery pack
