Few things are more frustrating than a car that won’t start. Before you call for a tow, let’s diagnose the problem. Many common causes can be fixed on the spot by a mobile mechanic.

Dead Battery

The most common cause of a no-start condition. Signs of a dead battery include:

  • Clicking sound when you turn the key
  • Dim or no dashboard lights
  • Slow engine crank that fades out
  • Nothing happens at all when you turn the key

Quick Check: If your headlights are dim or won’t turn on, it’s almost certainly a battery issue.

Faulty Starter Motor

If you hear a single click when you turn the key (or push the start button) but the engine doesn’t crank, you likely have a starter problem. The battery may be fine, but the starter can’t engage.

Bad Alternator

Did your battery just die after being replaced recently? The alternator may not be charging it. Signs include:

  • Battery warning light on dashboard
  • Dimming headlights while driving
  • Electrical accessories acting up
  • Multiple dead batteries in a short time

Fuel System Issues

If the engine cranks normally but won’t start, fuel delivery could be the problem:

  • Empty fuel tank (gauge could be wrong)
  • Clogged fuel filter
  • Failed fuel pump
  • Bad fuel injectors

Ignition System Problems

No spark means no start. Common ignition issues include:

  • Worn spark plugs
  • Failed ignition coils
  • Faulty crankshaft position sensor
  • Bad ignition switch

What You Can Do

Before calling for help, try these quick checks:

  1. Make sure the car is in Park (or neutral for manual)
  2. Check that the key fob battery isn’t dead
  3. Look under the hood for loose battery cables
  4. Try jump-starting the battery
